School Profile

Pentland State School is located in the Dalrymple Shire, 105km west of Charters Towers. The school was established in 1885 and serves a diverse rural community with social security, Government and grazing the main income sources. At present there are 19 students from Prep to Year 7 enrolled in the school. There are students of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent but we have no students from non-English speaking backgrounds. At the completion of Year 7, students commute to Charters Towers State High School or board at one of the three private boarding schools in Charters Towers.

Currently the school has one multi-age teaching area, library and a computer lab encompassing Years Prep-7.  Pentland State School offers quality curriculum programs, fully integrated using Smart Classroom Technology across the eight key learning areas. We are currently preparing for the introduction of the Australian Curriculum with English, Maths and Science.  The school aims for a constant working ratio of 1:1 with our computer lab. Community members have access to our Community Library which offers a range of children’s and adults books. All school classrooms are fully air conditioned since November 2001, thanks due to the Cooler Schools program and committed fundraising efforts from the local parent body at the time.

Visiting specialist teachers service the school for literacy and numeracy support, guidance, science support, speech therapy and hearing advice. Curriculum coordination and non-contact teaching time are provided through the appointment of an itinerant teacher attached to both Pentland and Homestead schools.

The school has implemented a number of intervention strategies to assist students with learning difficulties. These programs are administered by a trained teacher-aide and designed by the Principal and classroom teachers.
